His name in Meroitic is rendered as "Sebiumeker" or "Sebi-u-meker"; the meaning is uncertain but may involve concepts of creation or generation. He is depicted in human form — unlike the lion-headed Apedemak — and his role as a creator/progenitor deity is inferred from the relief contexts and his pairing with Apedemak in the Musawwarat program. He represents the distinctly Meroitic stratum of divine imagination that developed independently of Egyptian theological influence: a creator deity with no Egyptian equivalent whose cult was centered at the major indigenous Meroitic sanctuary.
