Rod is the divine ancestor and birth-fate deity, paired with the Rozhanitsy (birth goddesses). His name from Proto-Slavic *rodъ (clan, birth, kin) which is central to Slavic social organisation. Boris Rybakov proposed Rod as the supreme Slavic deity predating the Olympian-style Kiev Pantheon; most scholars consider this speculative, but Rod's function as a fate-dispensing deity at birth is secure.
