The dying-and-rising element of Melqart — his annual egersis (awakening) rite documented in Menander of Ephesus (via Josephus, Against Apion 1.118-119) — continues the Dumuzi/Tammuz dying-deity pattern that entered Phoenicia from Mesopotamia. The continuity between Baal (Ugaritic Bronze Age) and Melqart (Tyrian Iron Age) is strong but the Iron Age deity has a distinct city identity, making this a received_as relationship rather than a simple continuation.
